National Exposure for Hawkeye Area Council

Being an Indiana University alum, there are few times I get to rejoice in my team being in the national spotlight (unless they are playing Iowa in basketball of course). But recently, the Hawkeye Area Council team has been honored with three national recognitions.

The Howard H. Cherry Scout Reservation was honored in February by being selected as the site for a Cub Scout National Camping School. Cub leaders from seven states gathered at the Allsop Outdoor Education Center for this training exercise. Paul Gibbs, Jim Fenske and David Cunningham from the Hawkeye Area Council served on staff. Leta Palmer from the Inland Pacific Council in Washington state served, as did Carol Meyer and Colleen Grayson from the Winnebago Council in Waterloo. Jim Dedera from the Lewis and Clark Council in Belleview, Illinois served as staff consultant. The course would not have happened without the Dining Hall crew: Aaron Randolph; Mr. and Mrs. Walt Gorbatjuk: Dick Eyman; Bob Manchester; Don Hamous and Paul Swanson.

We have also been selected to host a National Camping School (NCS) at the AEGONUSA COPE/Climbing Center. We are still negotiating the date for this, but we were selected because we have the finest camp facilities in the Central Region. Once again, this NCS will be centered at the Allsop Outdoor Education Center.

Finally, I am proud to announce that the Cho-Gun-Mun-A-Nock Lodge of the Order of the Arrow has once again been honored with a National award. For an unprecedented third year in a row, our Lodge will receive the OA’s National Service Award. Only eight of these are presented each year. Representatives of the Lodge will attend the National Boy Scouts of America Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida in May to receive this coveted award. Congratulations to all the Arrowmen who gave servant leadership and cheerful service during 2008. You are, indeed, the best in the land!
